Before understanding how to beat slot machines it is necessary to understand the history of slot machine itself and the challenges it faced.

The History of Slot Machines

Charles Fey is often credited with the invention of the first casino slot machine in 1895. He later teamed up with Mills Novelty Company in 1907 and they manufactured the Mills Liberty Bell. The original slot machine did not have the kind of decorations they have today. They used playing cards like the king, queen and jacks. The early machines actually a bell which was rang when a player hit a winning combination. The basic design of the Liberty Bell has been adopted into the slot machines of today. The machine has greatly evolved into microprocessor controlled device with up to five reels and 100 pay lines up from the initial three reels with a single pay line.

Slots machine became more popular in America in the 1940s after Bugsy Siegel installed slot machines to the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas which he owned. The initial intention of slot machine installed by Siegel was to entertain the girlfriends and concubines or wives of gamblers who played table games. In a short while, the earnings from the slots machine started rivaling those of other games. This trend continued and by 1990 slots machines had become so popular that it accounted for nearly two thirds of total casino revenues in the US.

Slots can broadly be categorized today into two, flat tops or straight slots and progressive slots. This is based on whether the machine plays for a fixed jackpot or progressive jackpot.

Flat Jackpots and Progressive Jackpots

To understand how to beat and play slot machines require understanding the various jackpots that are available in slots. Flat jackpots are what one plays for in ordinary games. You basically need a winning combination to get the jackpot. The value of the jackpot is predetermined and therefore known.

Progressive jackpots are often the most interesting in slots games. The amount of the jackpot increases with each unsuccessful play and continues to do so until one day the machine hits for a lucky winner. There are machines that are networked into the jackpot play and you need to find out if you are interested in playing for the progressive jackpot. It usually requires higher bets to activate the progressive jackpot in the slot machines involved. It there requires that you prepare yourself well before deciding to play for a jackpot or you may simply play for combination win.

Casinos are believed to have the habit of placing machines with higher payout percentages in strategic places to attract new players and to encourage those playing that they could just be about to win. This character is become less popular today because it was found to be counterproductive with players lining up to play on one machine and avoiding others.

Progressive Slots

Progressive slot machines allow players to play slots games for progressive jackpots at the same time as they play for the usual winning combination.
